A 635-mile match race

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

I was sitting in Robin’s cabin, wondering what the next blog would be when the e-mail alert rang on the laptop. A gift from the blog gods. (Read More…)

Wind, weather and its meaning

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

There must be a parable for our economic times in what is happening outdoors today on the Choptank and Tred Avon Rivers. The wind was forecast to blow in the 30-knot range, with gusts as high as 60 in some places on the eastern shore. Steve Larrimore, a rigger here, guessed we were getting up to 40 knots in the afternoon, and everything in the boatyard was moving. (Read More…)

Wisdom through adversity

Monday, October 27th, 2008

The forecast for Saturday was grim, putting in question the wisdom of following our plans to sail Robin to Cambridge, Md., for the third annual Schooner Rendezvous. No one ever said I was wise, though. When Monica on Friday looked at the predictions and suggested we could sleep aboard Robin in Oxford and drive the 16 miles to Cambridge, I said she could drive, I’d sail. (Read More…)

A helping hand for a fine man

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Regular readers of this blog will know the name Richard Griffiths. He is the captain of the 1903 lugger Rosalind of St. Ives, aboard which he lives here in the boatyard. His is a boat of character, commanded by a skipper of distinct character. (Read More…)

Shame, and a yearning for Robin

A walk with Mr. Street

Monday, October 13th, 2008

I spent a second day at the sailboat show in Annapolis, following one sailing legend around in order to gather information for a future profile in the magazine. The show attracts many of the names in the business as well as many of us no-names. (Read More…)

Showtime in Annapolis

Friday, October 10th, 2008

I went to the United States Sail Boat Show in Annapolis yesterday, looking for a story. (I left Robin in Oxford, even though it turned out to be a nice October day, sunny and warm, because the state capitol is six hours away by boat.) Going there was part of the job, but for me, it’s the tough part. (Read More…)

My walk about the yard

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

What a beautiful afternoon in Chesapeake country. The day started on the raw side of cool, and the sky was overcast. But now there is pure blue up there, and the light breeze is balmy. (Read More…)

Tiki Night at the club

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

This has nothing to do with living or working aboard, unless you consider leaving the boat to go home an aspect of those activities. I left Robin early so that I could participate in an activity of our local boating club in Edgewater Park, N.J. (Read More…)

Taking in autumn’s essence

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Autumn has arrived subtly on the shores of the Tred Avon and Choptank Rivers. It was there this morning, in wafers of fog that levitated, in the long shadows of early morning, above the chopped stalks in farmers’ fields and that burned off slowly at the edges of tall pine forests. (Read More…)
