Home away from home

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

There was plenty of wind on the final day, and still I ran the diesel. I had good reason — the forecast for even more wind today, the precursor to a nor’easter connected to a tropical storm. (Read More…)

Winds to take us home

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

The final leg of this journey — tomorrow from Chesapeake City, Md., to Robin’s slip in Oxford — promises to be entertaining. The forecast is for winds from the northeast, 15 to 20 knots, with gusts. Reef ’em and ride ’em, partner! (Read More…)

Back to single-handing

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

The full circle of our September cruise aboard Robin was completed at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, when we dropped anchor in Cape May Harbor. It was a hectic two weeks, but for all the stress and, at times, emotions bordering on terror, I can’t think of a better way to spend that much time with your best friend. (Read More…)

Happy anniversary

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

Off to starboard, to the west, there is a long strip of undeveloped beach visible when Robin is lifted to the crest of a 6-foot roller. The beach is, of course, beige or, at this distance, off-white, and above it is a cap of uninterrupted greenery. (Read More…)

They should have a great ride, with two days of good wind from the north and northeast forecast. (Read More…)

With the sun at our backs

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

Robin is sailing west at 9 o’clock Wednesday, passing 8 miles north of Block Island just one week after she was last in these waters. It is a cool, brilliant morning. The northeast cliff of the island, buff-colored, is not only visible, but the shadows that etch its face are clear, as well. (Read More…)

Fish on!

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

Finally, I just landed a 36-inch bluefish, the first live meal to come aboard on this trip. (Read More…)

Next stop: Newport

Monday, September 15th, 2008

Monday morning and the sun is blasting through the open companionway, having risen two hours ago across Cape Cod Canal. We are on a mooring at the Point Independence Yacht Club in Onset, Mass, and are waiting for the southwest wind to die or the direction to shift before we head down Buzzards Bay, probably sometime tomorrow. Until this morning, we were on schedule. Now, every day we lose will mean getting home a day later than planned. (Read More…)

Cruising the Vineyard

Saturday, September 13th, 2008

The best way to get around Martha’s Vineyard, if you have arrived by boat, seems to be the Martha’s Vineyard Transit Authority buses. For $6, you can ride any of the buses on any of the routes all day long. Since we planned to stay put today, we bought a couple of tickets and set out to see the island. (Read More…)
